Obituary for Beatrice Gerstel
Beatrice Gerstel (nee Neimark)
It is with great sadness that the family of Beatrice Gerstel announces her passing after a lengthy illness, on Monday, April 30, 2018, at age 93. Beatrice will be lovingly remembered by her children, Kenneth (Iris) Goldman, Barbara Joy Laffey, and Carol (Todd Huttunen) Goldman, stepchildren Peter (Mary) Gerstel, grandchildren Mark, Sandra (Marty) and Maya, and great grandchild Fletcher. Beatrice was predeceased by her husband Solomon Gerstel, her former husband Bertrand Goldman, her brother Sol (Ruth) Lefton and her sister Fay (Robert) Freedman.

Beatrice was born on January 1, 1925 in Detroit MI to Maximilian and Rebecca Neimark. She studied Chemistry at Michigan State University. She married Bertrand Goldman in 1945. After moving to Skokie IL, Beatrice began working for G. D. Searle Pharmaceuticals as a Lab Technician and then rose to the position of Chemist. In 1970 Beatrice married Solomon Gerstel and moved to Highland Park IL. She became an active and dedicated member of Highland Park Hadassah where she helped manage Hadassah House, registered voters, led fundraising activities, served as President, and mentored younger members. One proud accomplishment was a Hadassah trip to Washington DC to lobby Congress on behalf of Israel.
Beatrice was a lifelong learner who enjoyed book clubs and classic films. She was a deeply caring individual and a good friend who loved getting to know people and discovering their stories. Her children will remember her as a strong, kind, supportive, and generous mother who encouraged them to pursue their goals.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, May 6, 2018 at 11:00 a.m., at Zion Memorial Chapel, 785 E. Boston Post Road, Mamaroneck NY 10543 (914) 381-1809. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Beatrice’s life. Private interment. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice Care in Westchester and Putnam, 540 White Plains Road, Tarrytown NY 10591. The family would like to thank caregiver Catherine Fortune, caring volunteer Barbara Ceconi, hospice social worker Curtis, and hospice nurses Pat, Amy, and Lisa for their devoted and compassionate care.
