Obituary for Cynthia Ann Reynolds
Cynthia Ann Reynolds was born in 1958 to Marilyn Rose Reynolds and Richard Lon Reynolds. Her theatrical talents surfaced early: she starred in the Waukegan High School production of Once upon a Mattress when she was a first year! She attended Illinois Wesleyan University and then moved to NYC to sing. And sing she did, with Amato Opera, Vineyard Opera, NY Gilbert & Sullivan Players and other companies. She worked the night shift word processing at Weil Gotshal and taught herself computer programming—and then joined SoftWise as a software designer. She married a tenor she often sang with, Richard Slade, and they had two children: Merlin and Julian. Her talents and skills included botanical illustration, knitting, and making incredibly complex Halloween costumes. She picked her childhood instrument, the violin, back up and became an avid orchestra and chamber music player, and mentored the teaching staff at SongCatchers in New Rochelle. She was a beloved member of First Unitarian Society of Westchester. She made a bold career change, becoming a school teacher, and found her happiest place in Peekskill, teaching elementary music and strings, and directing the middle school musicals. Even when stricken with Glioblastoma she maintained her high standard of achievement, impressing all the therapists with her progress and her determination. She leaves behind grieving family and an immense array of friends and colleagues — and so, so many small children whose lives she changed.
