Daniel Katz
Husband, Father, Brother, Son, Uncle.
Co-President, PSK Supermarkets DBA Foodtown, Freshtown, Pathmark Chairman & CEO of Allegiance Retail Services, LLC
We remember Daniel Katz. Daniel leaves behind his loving wife Laura, four beautiful children, Jillian, Abigail, Victoria, and Mitchell. Daniel is also survived by his parents, Susan and Sydney, his brother Noah, his sister in law Deborah, his sister Meredith his brother in law Jay, 9 nieces and nephews, and so many more. He will be sorely missed. Daniel passed away from Cancer, in his home, surrounded by his family.
First and foremost, Daniel was a beloved husband to his wonderful wife of 29 years, Laura. Dan met Laura while he was in college and she was in high school. They were sweethearts from the beginning. They had four beautiful children and Danny was a dedicated, loving, and amazing father. He always made time for his family including fun trips, memories, and so much more.
Through the years, they enjoyed holidays, graduations, bar and bat mitzvah’s, weekend get to togethers and many other special family moments. As a family, they traveled together across the country and world on sightseeing trips and excursions. Danny always preferred “educational trips” that emphasized learning about the places, histories, and cultures they visited. Every day was an action-packed adventure. He and Laura did a superb job raising their children; Jillian works as a mechanical engineer in tech, Abigail is in medical school in NYC, Victoria works in technology- business consulting, and Mitchell finishes up college this year, having already created, and sold, his first software company. He was so proud of them.
Daniel was a man of many passions. He enjoyed skiing, bicycle riding, exercising, spending time in nature, motorcycle riding, hiking, fishing, and fixing up old cars. Daniel was also an accomplished blues guitarist, spending hours writing his own songs and performing classics by Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page. Despite his diagnosis of cancer, Daniel was also in his peak health and fitness and he even enjoyed inspiring others to begin their own health journey. He truly lived every day to the fullest and strove to make the world a better place than he found it.
In the professional world, Daniel was an industry leader, a builder of companies, and a true entrepreneur. Along with his father Sydney, his brother Noah, and his associates at work, he built a real estate company and a renowned 13 store supermarket company in the New York
Region. They operate under the names Foodtown, Freshtown, and Pathmark. He leaves behind his PSK Supermarket family of 1000+ associates, who he viewed as members of his extended family. He cared deeply about the wellbeing of everyone at the PSK company. He formulated bonus programs for the associates, safety protocols during the pandemic that led to procedures that were used across the country, payments for people’s health care. He also crafted retirement plans for associates, personal loan programs, health care programs to better people, and so much more. Daniel was passionate about negotiating deals, striving to make every business deal a win-win for both parties. He always wanted to know how he could create value for not only himself and his family, but for the people he worked with and the communities, no matter what the endeavor. If
everyone did not win, he did not want be a part of it. His biggest recent achievement, which he started before his diagnosis, was leading the company’s transition these past years to be an employee-owned company, which PSK achieved in September of 2021. This solidified the company for another generation. Danny was always concerned about the long term for people, not the short term.
Daniel was also active in so many other areas. He was the Chairman and CEO of Allegiance Retail Services, LLC, the buying cooperative of 30 supermarket companies across the New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania region. His leadership included helping the coop through critical transformational periods that resulted in significant growth for the members, the supermarket vendor community, and most of all, competitive shelf prices for his supermarket customers. He was active in YPO, the Young Presidents Organization. He and his wife Laura are extremely charitable, constantly donating their time and other resources to various organizations such as The Israeli FIDF and The International Rett Syndrome Foundation to name a few.
The Katz family are finalizing details to create a foundation in Dan’s honor. Once complete, those wishing to contribute in Dan’s memory can do so by viewing details on the Allegiance website. Daniel will be remembered for all of his accomplishments and his legacy will continue to live on through his family. In his journal, Daniel wrote, “the meaning of life, is a life with meaning” and that he most definitely had. He will be dearly missed by all but forever in our hearts.
