Obituary for Doris Benjamin
We are saddened to announce that Doris Benjamin passed away on July 24, 2021, at age 84.
Born in the Bronx, NY, she was possessed of remarkable gifts as an artist, and studied at New York City’s prestigious Music and Art High School. In 1956, she married her beloved husband, Marty Benjamin (who died in 2010, and whose loss affected her profoundly).
Doris, Marty and their Children, Scott and Brian moved to Mamaroneck in 1966. Doris soon went back to school to become a teacher, earned two masters degrees, and had a long career teaching in the Mamaroneck/Larchmont School system. Much of that time she spent in the Special Ed Department, where she had an amazing and positive influence on thousands of children and families. Even through this year, she received phone calls, letters and emails from children she taught 30 or more years ago, to tell her that she was the first teacher who believed in them, and allowed them to believe in themselves. She frequently received invitations to graduations, weddings, as well as birth announcements from generations of former students.
She adored, and is remembered and missed by, her Sister Ellen (and husband Bob), her sons, Scott and Brian, their spouses, Andrea and Ray, her grandchildren (and their spouses), Joshua (Frances); Aaron (Laura); Anya, and Sophia, and her great grandchildren, Sonia and Milo, as well as even more family friends and colleagues too numerous to list here.
Funeral Service 10:30am Monday at Zion Memorial Chapel 785 E. Boston Post Rd. Mamaroneck 914-381-1809, interment will follow at Wellwood Cemetery, West Babylon, NY
In lieu of flowers, people may wish to remember her with a gift to the Leukemia Research Foundation, https://allbloodcancers.org/donate/ or Save the Children. https://www.savethechildren.org/
