Elizabeth Lahm Heller June 27, 1930 - September 10, 2022
Elizabeth Heller of Larchmont, NY - a elegant woman with quick wit and a bright smile - passed away on Saturday, September 10th in her home. A sister, wife, mother and grandmother, she joined the late Herbert Heller, her beloved husband of 68 years. She is survived by her three daughters, Karen, Alice and son-in-law, Larry Childs , Nina and son-in-law William Smith, , sister-in-law Mary Silk and grandchildren Julia, Jake and Sky.
Born in New York City on June 27, 1930, Liz was the youngest child of Mortimer (of M.H. Lamston) and artist, Renee Pollack Lahm. Having lost her mother when she was only 14, Liz continued to live with her father between New York City and Stanford, CT. She attended Birch Wathen Lenox School in Manhattan, graduated from Connecticut College, later earning a Master’s in Social work at Columbia University, during which time she became engaged. After marrying in 1954, the family settled in Scarsdale where she volunteered with a social service agency and raised her three daughters.
The family often spent summers on the Twin Lakes of Salisbury, CT in the Berkshires. In retirement, Liz and Herb were active supporters of the local non-profit Human Development Services of Westchester (HDSW) and members of the Beach Point Club in Mamaroneck.
Besides family, Liz’s interests revolved around the city's museums, theatre and antiques and she was an avid follower of the New York arts scene. Her volunteer work at the Whitney gave her great satisfaction, as did a good flea market find. Her interest in and sense of design were evident in everything she touched, from her artful personal presentation to her home.
Liz was as perceptive and discerning in examining life as she was in examining art. A daily cover-to-cover reader of the New York Times, she was a true New Yorker by birth and temperament. Along with an active social life, Liz lovingly embraced family and friends with a reserved warmth. She was insightful, principled and forthright - qualities which were enhanced by a keen social awareness and a nuanced humor. She will be dearly missed by family and friends.
Services will take place at Zion Memorial Chapel in Mamaroneck, NY on Thursday September 22, 2022, at 11am. Donations to Planned Parenthood and St. Jude Hospital welcomed in lieu of flowers. Guests are invited to share an image, artifact, artwork, or piece of writing at a temporary memorabilia table at the funeral. They are also invited to post thoughts and photos to the Zion virtual obituary page.
