Ellin Bousel died in her sleep on Thursday, March 16th at the age of 92. She was the mother of Aaron (Patience), Paul (Merrilee Seidman), and Debby Malfitano (Carmen Malfitano), grandmother of Josh, Rachel, Sophie, Simon, and Rebecca, great grandmother of Geisel Bousel and Ari Flores, step-mother of Joan, Jay, and Alan Falk.
Ellin was born in 1930 to Sidney and Marcy Cohan and grew up in the Bronx. She married her first husband, George Bousel, in 1949 and they had three children, Aaron, Paul and Debby. In 1959 they moved to New Rochelle, NY. In 1967 George died suddenly and she found herself widowed with three children. Knowing what she had to do, Ellin went back to school (she’d only had one year of college and had been a stay at home mom) and eventually earned a Master’s Degree in Education. She taught English as a second language in an elementary school in Queens, NY for over twenty years. In 1968 she met Oscar Falk and they began a relationship that lasted over forty years until his death in 2010. They were married in 1998.
In 2019, unable to continue to maintain the house she lived in for over sixty years, Ellin moved to The Atria at Rye Brook where she enjoyed the last years of her life. Ellin had a strong commitment to family and was much beloved by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
There will be a graveside ceremony at Mount Eden Cemetery, 20 Commerce Street, Hawthorne, NY on Wednesday, March 22nd at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Torah Fund of the Women’s League For Conservative Judaism, https://www.wlcj.org/about/torah-fund/, or The World Wildlife Fund, https://www.worldwildlife.org/
