Obituary for Evelyn M. Jacobs
New Rochelle – Evelyn Jacobs of New Rochelle, New York, passed away peacefully on January 17, 2018 in Highland, NY after a long and difficult battle with breast cancer. She was less than 3 weeks away from her 80th birthday.
Born in Hilversum, Holland on February 6, 1938 to Heinz and Liselotte Loewenstein, Evelyn immigrated to the United States when she was less than a year old. She was an only child who taught her parents English while going to school. After graduating from New Rochelle High School as part of the Class of 1956, she continued her education by receiving an Associate of Arts degree from Fairleigh Dickenson University in 1958.
On July 5, 1964, she married Michael Jacobs. They were married for over 35 years before Michael passed away in 2000. She subsequently met and developed a relationship with Ed Fisher, who predeceased her in 2015.
She worked as a dental hygienist for over 15 years for Dr. Cullen and then for Dr. Robert Bruskin in Mamaroneck, NY. After taking time off to raise her son, she changed careers and became an insurance administrator for Direct Mass Marketing in New Rochelle, and then an office assistant for Eppinger, Reingold & Fremont for several years.
Evelyn was a long-time member of Temple Israel of New Rochelle. She was also a long-time member of and volunteer in Gilda’s Club, Women’s American ORT, and Hadassah, where she received a lifetime achievement award. She belonged to several singing groups, including the Temple Israel choir, the Gilda’s Club Cabaret singers, the Westchester Women’s Choral, and others. She also was active in Mah Jongg, bridge, and knitting groups.
Evelyn was originally diagnosed with breast cancer in 1989. She was treated and was symptom-free for many years until the cancer metastasized and returned in 2005. She persevered, fought through increasing levels of pain, and continued to lead an active lifestyle until late in 2017.
Evelyn is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Daniel and Karen Jacobs of Poughkeepsie, NY, and two grandchildren, Amanda and Michaela Jacobs.
A funeral service will be held on January 22, 2018 at 10:15AMat Zion Memorial Chapel, 785 East Boston Post Road, Mamaroneck, NY, 10543, (914) 381-1809.
