Obituary for Frederick R. Rosenberg

Fred Rosenberg, long a citizen of Mamaroneck, died on Wednesday, October 26, at home at the age of 96. He was known in the community for his civic work and warm sense of humor, and he will be much missed.
Fred was born in New York City. His family soon moved to New Rochelle, where he grew up. He attended the Ethical Culture and Fieldston Schools in New York and then Harvard University. After graduating from college in 1941, he spent one year at Harvard Business School before entering the Army. He was in the Signal Corps during World War II, serving in North Africa and France. On returning after the war, he worked at several establishments in New York City before joining Glensder Textile, his father’s firm. After nearly two decades at Glensder, he purchased a small textile importing company. He dissolved that firm several years later and entered insurance.
In 1947, he married Barbara Schwab, also of New Rochelle; they were together until her death in 1997. They settled in Mamaroneck in 1949, where they raised a family of five children. In 1998, he married Mary Louise Cox, with whom he remained until his death.
He was active in the community — a docent at the Jay Heritage Center in Rye, a member of the Westchester Council on Crime and Delinquency, a visiting reader (and audience) for elementary school children in the Mamaroneck and Rye Neck schools, and a devoted supporter of the Mamaroneck Public Library.
He is survived by his widow, Mary Louise Cox; three children (Jean Rosenberg, Ann Walsh, and Bob Rosenberg); six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; his brother, Ed; his brother-in-law, Ted Eisler; and three nephews and two nieces. Two children (John and Charlie) predeceased him, and he also leaves five stepchildren (Barbara Beardsley, RaeAnn O’Brien, Ila Loveridge, Darrel Cox Jodrey, and John Cox Jr.), thirteen step-grandchildren, and two step-great-grandchildren.
There will be a commemorative celebration Sunday afternoon, November 20, from 1:00 to 4:00 at the Shore Acres clubhouse (500 The Parkway, Mamaroneck).
He wished to be remembered through contributions in his name to either of two institutions.
