Joel Barry Lieberman, age 81, passed peacefully on April 1, 2023 .
We mourn the loss of a true mensch, a devoted husband, son, and father, uncle and cousin and loyal friend to many, who knew him and whom he touched.
Survived by his devoted wife, Elizabeth ( Belsky), loving daughter Rachel, and loving son, Rafi.
Predeceased by his parents, Saul and Dorothy, and sister, Susan Katz.
Joel attended Hunter College and St. John’s Law School. He practiced law for 50 plus years and found his calling to be advocating and representing the less fortunate and needy securing housing and shelter. He became counsel for the NYState Housing Finance agency and in 2001 started Tax Reduction Advocates, specializing in tax certiorari law and successfully representing many clients. Joel was passionate about providing children and families with the opportunity to
have access to quality and a diverse educational experience and in 1996, was a founding member of Westchester Fairfield Hebrew Academy/Carmel Academy, a non denominational pluralistic Jewish Day School which became a thriving and innovative center for Jewish education in Greenwich, CT. He was awarded and recognized for his unending devotion to the school where his own and hundreds of children benefited from his passion. Joel and his family have been longtime active members at Bet Am Shalom Synagogue in White Plains, where we have always had a spiritual home and community. We are forever indebted to the wonderful and devoted caretakers, Pawel and Piotr Gulbicki, Hortense Stewart and Jennifer Pardella, who treated him with kindness and dignity throughout his battle with Parkinson’s Disease. Joel will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
