Ruth Stone passed away peacefully on August 23, 2017 at the age of 101. Lovingly called “Nanny Ruth”, she will be missed to an extreme degree by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren: Richard Stone, Candy Stone, Nancy Stone, Marvin Wexler, Jon Drimmer, Laura Stone, Nikki Stone, Edward Drimmer, she had survived her husband of 63 years, Irving Jerome Stone. Ruth Stone was an amazing person. At the age of eighteen, Ruth graduated Summa cum Laude, a member of Phi Sigma Science Honors. In 1963, Ruth earned her Ph.D. from New York University. Her other degrees included such widely varied areas as Neurophysiology, Private Detective, Policewoman, and many others. She was the descendant of the first school teacher in New York, Elizabeth Missing. She went on to teach such varied areas as science, Physiology, cosmology, auto-mechanics, and many more. She was an award- winning artist, painting in oil and watercolor as an avocation, especially in her later years. Her awards included Soroptimist’s Woman and the Year, Phi Sigma Science Honors, National Science Foundation scholarship. Science education and teaching children were her vocation and passion. She was the science coordinator for Yonkers NY, principal of PS 8 (which is now the “Patricia DiChiaro School”), principal of Lincoln High School (at the time the only woman principal of a secondary school in Yonkers), Chairman in Biology for Yonkers, instructor of science teachers in Long Island and New York and New Jersey. She was affectionately known to her students as “Doc Rock.” In spite of her many awards, loving and teaching her own children and grandchildren was the activity that she loved the best. Her family will miss Ruth for the rest of their lives. In lieu of flowers, Memorial contributions in her name should be made to one of the animal rescue charities.
