Seymour Irving Gussack
New Rochelle - Seymour Irving Gussack was born on December 7, 1923 to Nathan and Fannie Gussack. Known as Gus by all since his teens, he spent his early years in the Bronx and Queens growing up with brother Milton.
He attended Stevens Institute in Hoboken in 1940, and joined the Navy in 1942. He was selected for Officers Training School at Annapolis getting his Mechanical Engineering degree while still in the Navy.
After the war, Gus worked with his "Pop" at the family business Grant Pulley until he opened General Bearing in 1958. GB became a dynamic international company under Gus's leadership, and with his band of brothers, Billy, Brad, Peter, and Bernie, he presided over GB until the company was sold in 2010.
In 1947, Gus married Manya Kanof, daughter of Esther and Isidore. They had 5 children, Amy, Lisa, Faith, Nina and David.
The family eventually settled in New Rochelle NY. Gus went on to establish lifelong friendships with the Higaki family in Japan through his business, and Soyoko and her children Rentaro and Shojiro have become part of the Gussack family. His relationships all over the world are as strong and long lasting as the steel in ball bearings.
Gus was called on to serve his country again in the early 60's working through his business ventures in the Eastern Bloc. He continued this relationship throughout his life being grateful to the country he loved and eager to serve.
Gus always said establishing a family base in Cape Cod was his greatest accomplishment, though being a star in Fantasy Baseball Camp, catching and hitting against the pros like a pro at age 85 counts as well.
Gus loved the Cape and the family's houses there were always lively and loving places. The familiar picture of Gus on the shore arms crossed, smiling across the water at his family at play is emblazoned in everyone's minds and hearts.
His sons-in-law, Alan Septimus, Allan Stein, Robert Baruc, and Kermit Moyer loved him like their own father. His grandchildren, Adam, Sophie, Jonathan, Rebecca, Siri, Benjamin, Daniel, Natasha, Jessie and Linda were his shining beacon to the future, he was completely smitten with them and always generous with his affection and time.
He met Ellen Weisenthall in 1995 and they have shared a loving and inclusive relationship for the past 22 years.
Seymour Gussack, grateful to his parents, thankful for his children and grandchildren, baseball star, international businessman, tennis afficianado, loyal friend and a man who's helped and inspired all who knew him to follow their dreams. Service on Friday at 9:30 AM at Bet Am Shalom Synagogue, 295 Soundview Ave. in White Plains. Shiva will be on Saturday 6:30 PM to 9:30 PM and on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday at 2 PM to 5PM and 7 PM to 9 PM.
