Shirley Cooper of Mamaroneck passed away on Friday March 10, 2017. She was 94. Born in Worcester, MA on February 4, 1923 to James (Zalman) and Sarah Smith. Shirley was the beloved wife of the late Jesse Cooper. She was a loving aunt to Sarah Malino, Judith Smith, Deborah Smith and James D.Smith, Leslie Pentland, Bruce Smith, Marlene and Neil Rimsky, Marty, Neil and David Oser. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Beth K. Smith. She will be remembered fondly by great-nieces and nephews and many cousins. A life-long career woman, Shirley was employed as an executive secretary to top officials at RCA in Boston, MA and at Honeywell in Mamaroneck, NY. She was devoted to her work, efficient and well-organized. She worked until close to her 80th year. She was an active member of Temple Israel of New Rochelle, volunteering in many capacities from greeting people on Friday nights to making matzoh balls in the kitchen for congregational Passover Seders. In her retirement, she enjoyed reading with first graders and other volunteer experiences. She was extremely devoted to her family and friends and loved to socialize. Shirley was passionate about sports. She became a fine tennis player when she played endless highly competitve tennis games in the summers with her brothers and sister in her youth and became an enthusiatic and skilled golfer with her husband, Jesse. She also was an avid Red Sox and Giants fan. She loved to watch sports matches of all kinds, both live and televised. She held strong opinions about her teams and her players, and was delighted to discuss details of games and matches with friends and family.
Cantor Emily Sleeper Mekler, Shirley’s beloved cousin will officiate at her Funeral Service. It will be held at 1pm Sunday at ZION MEMORIAL CHAPEL 785 E. Boston Post Rd. Mamaroneck, NY.
